The llama-tipping group is filling in the holes. The good people at Defcon have announced some issues with the expected Electronic Badges this year. You can read all about it over HERE.

Our fellow llama-tipping member Brandon felt that this was a shame and we needed to fix this. With me filling the roll of the graphics guy, he has designed now one but two badges this year! They are only available to internal llama-tipping members, but they will be pretty exciting!

ARM Badge

Fully Pre-Assembled ARM Badge is the fancier badge. It will go for $40 USD for the badge, take 2 x AAA batteries, and match the T-Shirt graphics. For this unit, people will want to use one of the following units to program and debug the EFM32ZG108F8 processor:
J-Link Mini 'EDU' ($18 USD)

J-Link Full 'EDU' ($60 USD) - Recommended

AVR Badge

This through-hole "Assemble Yourself" badge is the budget version of the badge this year. The board itself will cost $15 USD and require a set of parts for about $13.13 USD + $4.99 USD Shipping and also takes 2 x AAA batteries. You can use almost any AVR programmer, but I will link a well priced one. What you will definitely need is the Mouser parts list so you can order them!

So now that Defcon 23 has ended everyone will probably be working on their badges when they can. There are still a few badges that need to be reworked and those will be sent out to the people who are waiting on them. Something that I have been meaning to get around to doing was releasing all the KICAD and generated Gerbers, PDF's, and CSV's associated with this board. So I am happy to announce that I have a tarball contaning all that stuff! Please note that this project was done using the latest version of kicad at the time version BZR 6091 so make sure your version is that or newer. I will be in IRC or hangouts if anyone has any questions.

Expect a bitbucket public repo to go live with the driver code and some examples shortly after I finish reworking the badges I have and I can play around with writing the drivers for my own.

This year at DefCon 23, we had llama-tipping badges! The first ever Digital llama-tipping badge! There was some assembly required. Here is the parts list that pdx6 and I used for our soldering stations that worked out great! All of these are items available on Amazon.com for easy ordering. Also suggested is a lighted magnifying glass device if you think you may need one. Although, if your eyes are decent, you should be able to do it without one.

The final draft of the badges has been sent to the fab, I expect them back on the 4th of August. In total I ordered 20 PCB's to be made. Parts for 18 of the badges have been ordered which is one per person and are due to arrive on August 3rd. Find below a rendering of what the badges will look like

So the initial 5 boards for prototyping have come back from the Fab! I am waiting only on parts from Mouser which should arrive either Saturday or Monday at the latest. Once I have them I will assemble and test the boards and report back. I will be placing orders for the final badges after the testing is complete so I need all money in by then. Each year I make a shirt for the Llama-Tippers that makes fun of one of the major events of the past year. For Defcon 22, I decided to poke fun at Dogecoin, a joke about cryptocurrency that turned into a cryptocurrency itself. While I think Shiba Inus are cute, a llama is much more fitting for a cryptocurrency. First of all, it is untippable, and second, a llamagecoin sounds much cuter.

What will DC23 bring? I am thinking of Silk Road, but with Llamas. What about the FBI takedown? Can the FBI tip an untippable llama? What about Alpacas? What if there was a branch of government that simply investigated the tipping of llamas instead?

So the first batch of prototypes have been sent to the Fab and I expect them back in 10 days. I will try to get them working, if I find any problems I will patch them and then be placing orders for the full set of badges. As it currently stands the most basic routing of the board is complete. I plan to finish up routing by tonight and have the boards sent to the fab this Monday. Below is an unoptimized uncleaned copy of the llama badge.

Defcon 23 quickly approaches us. We will be there, will you? The Llama Tippers will be found roaming the area and participating in various activities such as the DC801 party! This will also be the first year in which we will have an Electronic Badge! Thanks to our fellow llama tipper Brando753 who is an electronics wizard and is programming, designing, and partially assembling badges for each member!

This year's llama-tipping theme is "The Silk Road* - keep an eye out for our custom shirts and badges! If you see us, feel free to compliment us on our design or just say " baaaaah" - we will know what you mean!

Long ago, in the town of Reno, Nevada, a band of geeks in high school headed out to the fields to do the typical freshman activity: tipping cows.

Much to their dismay, every cow in the pasture was already tipped. The town was over-run with so many bored teenagers that no cow that dared to sleep was still standing. With nothing else to do and a long night of teen freedom ahead of them, they debated about going cow standing instead.

The next field over had llamas, however. Mean, spitting llamas protecting their group of alpacas from predators. Llamas already sleep sitting down, and thus are untippable. Much like the gang that bonded over discovering the invincible powers of exploring llama-tipping, a llama simply cannot be tipped. To this day we harness the power of the untippable: The Llama.
